Kidney failure is critical and its treatment very expensive. How can we help low to middle income families with kidney treatment? With planning, R&D, and science, there are solutions.
Prevention is the best remedy, since the causes of kidney failure are scientifically proven and avoidable:
High blood pressure damages the kidneys and can be avoided through a healthy diet.
Diabetes strains the kidneys and can be avoided through diet.
A healthy lifestyle mitigates high blood pressure and diabetes.
Kidney damage can't be reversed. But it can be avoided. And for a damaged kidney in early stages, the rest of the kidney can be saved and further damage can be slowed or stopped.
Through online presence, social media, and education kiosks at medical centers, we educate the public on how to avoid kidney failure, and how to treat kidney ailments to stop further damage.
Booklets in easy Urdu language have been distributed free of cost to thousands by the foundation, in order to spread awareness. The literature creates awareness both about prevention, as well as management of kidney disease.
Pakistan faces a shortage of nephrologists, as well as general physicians trained on kidney disease.
Our solution is to provide the latest information on kidney diseases and treatment innovations to medical students and doctors through seminars, conferences, and distribution of literature. We also run and provide research facilities in Nephrology.
We have experience as professors and presenters at Mayo Hospital, King Edward Medical College, World Conference of Nephrology, and International Conferences. By broadly training medical students, we can widely reach the public in prevention, early detection and mitigation, and treatment of kidney disease.
An active center for hands-on training comes from dialysis centers within medical clinics and hospitals, of which we have already founded and established three centers.
By the time the damage reaches end stage kidney failure, the disease is critical and cost of treatment is expensive. In USA, dialysis costs $70,000/yr and is often covered by insurance. In Pakistan, the cost is $2500/yr. For the average lower to middle class family making $90 per month, this is unreachable. Insurance coverage is rare.
Through scientific research (R&D), local low cost manufacturing, and subsidies, Dr. Shakoh has reduced treatment to a fraction of the cost. Dr. Shakoh and donors also funded and built dialysis centers, so that we do not incur rent or equipment leasing costs. Imagine how with just $60 (15,000 rupees), you can provide haemodialysis for a month.
For patients below 55 years of age, the best treatment for end stage kidney failure is a kidney transplant. This saves the family a lot of agony and financial burden, and the patient can return to life as normal. Due to volunteer nephrologists and surgeons, the cost of a transplant is greatly reduced. Most kidneys are donated by kin, and we also seek to widen programs for organ donation upon death.
Our solutions are based on public education for prevention and early treatment, broad training of medical students and physicians for early and late stage treatment, scientific research for lower treatment cost, and establishing dialysis centers and volunteer doctors. Together, we can provide access to kidney healthcare for low to middle income families.
