As a nephrologist at Mayo Hospital Lahore, Dr. Shakoh witnessed the suffering of patients of kidney failure, especially those who could not access or afford costly dialysis care. In 1996, Dr. Shakoh, along with his wife and two friends, joined hands with donors to establish the first-ever free haemodialysis center in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Establishing a dialysis center in a government run hospital was not an easy task. But it was the best and most efficient way to reach patients in need. Dr. Shakoh was able to convince the hospital of the public service of such a center. In April 1996, with two dialysis machines and a water treatment system, the first free haemodialysis center at the hospital was established.
The center expanded with advanced bicarbonate haemodialysis machines in 2001, to 5 full dialysis stations. A high-end reverse osmosis system (highest quality of water fluid for dialysis) was added in 2001.
Since its establishment, over 10,000 dialysis sessions have been performed, saving the lives of many poor kidney patients, especially young mothers. All costs are born by the foundation.
In September 1977, the first ever free dialysis center was established at Mayo Hospital. This center has multiple dialysis stations and runs a double shift to serve more patients.
In 2000, a Reserve Osmosis System was added to this dialysis center, for the highest quality water fluid for dialysis.
Like the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, this dialysis center was build inside an existing hospital. This was the best solution to have the widest reach to patients in need. It continues to be a cost-efficient solution.
Over 9000 dialysis sessions have been performed at this center. All the costs are born by the foundation, including equipment, maintenance, supplies, medical staff, and engineers.
About 10 years ago, we established our third dialysis center. This is a more modern center, with five dialysis stations, and the latest equipment. It has become our main office and dialysis center. Over 5000 dialysis sessions have been performed at this center.
An active center for hands-on training comes from dialysis centers within medical clinics and hospitals. To have even wider reach, Dr. Shakoh trains the staff at urology and dialysis centers at various hospitals and clinics, as well as medical students. In addition, dialysis kits consisting of catheters, dialyser sets and solutions, are being provided for free to various hospitals for patients in need.
Dr. Shakoh has also trained doctors in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Mayo Hospital, on Peritoneal Dialysis. This life saving emergency procedure is now being reguarly performed in the medical ward of these hospitals.
